By Columnist TRB - Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, VP pick Paul Ryan and their wives spent the weekend on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard raising $7 million at various receptions only millionaires could afford to attend. Leaving one of those receptions Mrs. Romney could clearly be heard telling the news media we're "taking the White House. back." Taking it back? The Romney's haven't occupied the White House in the past, so how could they take it back? They've never had it. Perhaps she meant they were taking it back for Republicans. We could give her the benefit of the doubt and say that. Several months back we were led to believe by the news media that she was an elegant, above-the-fray type. Classy, you know? It has not turned out that way. She just as easily could have meant the Romneys are an extremely wealthy white couple who will do their best to get those pesky African Americans out of the White House. Yes, the sentiment behind the remark could have been that ignorant - Republicans have been doing and saying a lot of stupid things of late.
Republican candidate for the Senate in Missouri Todd Akin is a case in point. He recently told a reporter that only some rapes are what he called "legitimate." Akin, a Tea Party type, like Romney's VP pick, like all the bozos in Washington slowing down the budget process, claimed he had spoken to doctors who told him that "rape victims are unlikely to become pregnant," explaining that the "female body has ways to shut that whole thing down." He could not name any doctors who might have said that. These absurd notions were all part of his attempt to explain why women who have been raped should not be allowed to receive abortions legally. I know it sounds crazy - maybe as crazy as Mrs. Romney "taking back" the White House which she has never had - but that is what Akin said.
Of course he disavowed the entire thing later, especially after Romney and Ryan said publically they disagreed with his remarks. The problem is, at least Ryan and maybe Romney believe that rape is not a good enough reason for abortion. Romney even promises to defund Planned Parenthood. It is important to note that Akin only said he was taking the words back. He did not apologize for having said them - leaving women who have been raped and made pregnant to feel as though the resulting abortion was somehow their fault since their bodies didn't just "shut the whole thing down."
Akin had a good shot of beating Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) MI in the upcoming election. But it looks bad now. Republicans like Akin are quick to demonize the victim when she is a woman. He might have gotten away with that a few years back, but times have changed. It is pretty safe to assume that he lost a bid for Congress with his mouth the other day.
Another recent Republican embarrassment occured about a year ago, but we are just hearing about it now. Apparently, a group of Republican congressmen, after failing to pass a budget, took a junket to Israel where some of them got drunk and went for a swim in the famed Sea of Galilee. At least one of them undressed completely, skinny dipping, while other members of Congress and their families looked on. These are the people who represent us in Congress, the folks who will tell you that Social Security has to be cut, even though the government doesn't pay for it - you and your employer do. In other words, it is your money. But the Congress steals it anytime they want. They would even take your healthcare to pay for a tax cut for the rich. In fact, that is one of the things they plan to do.
It is hard to believe that Americans would allow themselves to be bullied by this mostly white trash crowd who thinks nothing of lying right in your face, stealing your money, talking your job, your house, your individual rights. Taking your life if they want. And what do we ask for in return? Nothing. And nothing is what we get.
