By Columnist TRB - Time is running out for Mitt. His people are crunching the numbers everyday, and the popularity ratings are just frozen in place. Most people don't like this cardboard man, who considers his crimes against our economy at Bain Capital his crowning achievement in life. So it came as no surpise that last night would find Clint Eastwood at the RNC talking to a chair. It was a welcome relief to watch a good actor at work giving his literal interpretation of the craziness America calls "politics." It was a masterful performance. At some point I actually believed he knew that chair - personally. Now, that's acting. Romney's running mate Paul Ryan had recently shown off his skills as a pathological liar, so last night it was Mitt's turn to re-make himself to re-define himself, to more clearly define himself to the American people. Seriously, he just looks like a guy who bought a lot of clothes at Sears in the Boy's Department, rubbed some Vasaline through his hair and thought he looked "presidential" enough' The penny loafers put him over the top. A presidential candidate was created out of discount clothing and millions in overseas bank accounts..
He will get a little bump out of that speech he made last night, even though, in his quest to talk about how great he and his wife think he is, he somehow managed to forget to mention the war going on in Afghanistan or veterans in general. He lied of course. Lying is okay now. The news media - those "fair and balanced folks" - have allowed lies to rule the news on most nights. They know for certain that it is an outright lie that Obama "stole" $700 billion from Medicade, Or is it million? It really doesn't make a differnce since it is a lie. If you want to hear the news media admit it is a lie, you have to go out of your way or wait for a "fact-checker" to analyze what the candidates are saying. Obama is not perfect either. But the lies coming out of the Romney camp are outrageous.
Not content to simply lie, Romney's people use every opportunity to discuss the "othernesss" of Obama. This is straight-out racism. They hint that he has a hidden anti-American agenda, they cozy up to crazy groups who believe he wasn't born in America. or that he is a Muslim pretending to be a Christian. The Romney people themselves don't actually come out and say these things. They don't have to. Others say them, people who cannot be connected to their campaign. Then Romney strides forward and says they're untrue. So they get a little bump when the "story" surfaces, and they get another one when they shoot it down. But things are about to change in a big way.
First there is the Democrat Party convention, which would have to be held on a sidewalk to be worse than the Republican convention. Then the truth will go out over the airwaves and Romney and Ryan's lies will be known to more people. Then the debates. Romney has been running for President since Bain Capital's outsourcing of Fred Flintstone's job at the rockpile. I have watched him debate many times. He is terrible. Put it this way - he is as bad as you might already think he is - and maybe even a little worse.
He will debate possibly one of the best public speakers in America - President Obama. It should be fun to watch, almost as fun as watching Clint Easwood speak to a chair.
If Romney has any brains he won't show up for the debate wearing clothes from the Boy's Department.
