The Democrats never overestimate their popularity to the extent Republicans do.
In fact, Democrats have been so damn paranoid since Carter left the White House 30 years ago that they've tried their best to mutate down to the level of the typical circa. 1980 Republican, hence the popular term "Rebublicrat." Even Barney Frank has embraced conservatism.
From another view, the whole thing has come apart, the hostages are long out of Iran, Jimmy Carter is off building homes for poor folks somewhere, and Ronnie Reagan is with his maker, whichever one that is. The Tea Party, perhaps the most fanatical people to ever want to be involved with government in the U.S. - yes, actually more fanatical than the ones already there - has come forward with promises to take the nation backward into the gaping, putrid maw of depression-era Jim Crowism, sexism, anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-labor and anti-government madness from which we emerged a half-century ago.
So there is a knot in the belief that the Tea Party wants to involve itself in government. It wants to dismantle government, because its members are just too ideological to make it work. Anything they can not understand they will destroy. And labor is one of those things, collective bargaining is one of those things. They don't get it, so they don't want it.
And so the time has come to stand up for this nation, even if you have to take to the streets. We can not allow a group of extremists to change our way of life and the lives of our children. You know it and I know it. We can't allow these fanatics to take us any farther.
We have to get back.
In Madison Wisconsin, in Indiana, in Iowa, in Florida sitting Republican governors with Republican majorities in their legislatures are all geared up to kill the American Labor movement.
"This is our moment" said Scott Walker governor of Wisconsin over the phone yesterday to whom he believed was one of his financial backers, one of the infamous mine-shaft Koch Brothers, who would pay to get rid of labor, who , in fact are paying to get rid of labor. But it wasn't even a Koch brother, just someone having fun with the governor, who was dumb enough to say "This is our moment, when asked if he thought he could really destroy the unions,
You have to wonder about destroying the unions since they created the middle class which has been withering away ever since the U.S. gave 5.5 million jobs, what would have been good paying union jobs, to the slave labor nation of Red China. Yes, isn't our world so much better now that we shun real democracies while cuddling up to dictators? How do you like this Republican plan to boil up some resentment between the public and private sector unions?
Doesn't seem to be working as well as it used to in the past.
Maybe the workers have become wise to this scam. When the U.S. ships 5.5 million jobs overseas it lessens the negotiation power of the private unions, who might have their jobs shipped out as well. So the public sector is left with better benefits. But that is not their fault. That is the fault of a rigged trade policy that Bush I, Clinton and Bush II participated in enthusiastically all the time knowing they could ruin the unions, this engine of the middle class. Well, they did.
They dismantled the industries, threw the workers out on the street with some bogus story about a healthy service economy which was due to arrive 20 years ago and now, in a last ditch effort to send us back to pre-history, the Republicans want to destroy the unions forever.
At last, this could be their Waterloo. Labor unions have always been more important to the people of this country than politicians. They will come out on top. And when they do these Republicans and Democrats who stole trillions of dollars from us and gave it to the banks, who allow the banks to steal money from us on a daily basis, who throw our friends out of their houses for missing a few mortgage payments, after the government promises to protect them from such actions, who give massive tax breaks to those who least need them, who take our tax money to purchase the best medical insurance for their families while they ponder ways to make our health benefits even worse than they already are.
It is about to come back at our government very soon. There are an enormous number of people out there and thousands are added every day who know the Congress that is supposed to protect us from what we are living through in America today is actually responsible for it. We have a government of criminals, protected by a Supreme Court that isn't much better.
The unions will not be destroyed by silly meaningless politicians. The unions will destroy the politicians. Put simply, the unions have done more good for America than any politician who seeks to get rid of them. The unions will win every time.
We need industry. We need jobs. We need unions.
We do not need Republicans who choose to use their power only to serve their ideology.
We had that before. We gave it the boot. The same boot today's Republicans can expect to feel on their backsides in the not to distant future.
