Indoctrinated all the way through life, we will believe almost anything we see hear or read on the mostly made-up news. But by far the greatest rip-off source of public information is the poll. There are so many organizations taking polls now that it is common for their results to cancel themselves out on virtually every issue. Polls have invented their own world. I world where no one lives.
There are liberal organizations who poll every liberal they can get their hands on. There are all of these "Foundations," most with CIA links, the Republicans hide behind, issuing one poll after another to support their side of an issue. There are even the "traditional" polls, often affiliated with newspapers and television networks, all with an axe to grind. Even the damn Gallop Poll can't be trusted because their methods of polling aren't quite up to snuff, according to officials in the game of polling.
Now. of course the polling results are just inaccurate. In some cases even wildly inaccurate. These polling people or whatever they are called can get the answer they want from you just by asking the question the right way.
For example:
Question A. Do you believe women should have control over decisions regarding their own bodies?
Or put another way:
Question B, Do you believe it is morally correct for a woman to have an abortion simply because she doesn't have time for a baby in her life?
And there you go, modern day polling equals nonsense.
We live at a time when you must be your own unofficial pollster. You have to listen to what other people say. You have to use common sense. And as a U.S. citizen you have to look at this mess of a nation and think of obvious ways it could be improved. What is holding the U.S. back and taking it down?
I conducted my own unofficial poll which included people of every political stripe and the results were amazing. Sure, I only spoke to a dozen people or so but I would go up against the Heritage Foundation polls any day of the week and I figure my result would be closer to truth than theirs,
I conducted my poll almost as you would a conversation. I doubt if any question was ever asked the same way. I wasn't looking for a polling seal of approval or anything. What would be the point, since none of them are true anyway?
I learned that , first of all, people quite literally can't stand the GOP and don't even want to talk about it. This is mostly due to the extension of tax cuts for the rich and also that the Republicans seem so smarmy. Yes, they won the elections for Congress last fall. But so what? Democrats stayed home by the millions in that election. They already had what they wanted (or at least thought they did) in the White House, a Democrat. Now, if the Republicans had won the 2008 presidential election, they would have stayed home in 2010 and the Democrats would have taken Congress overwhelmingly.
We somehow always forget this phenomenon, this routine, even though it has been happening for more than a century.
I also learned that U.S.citizens on the whole believe the wars in both Afghanistan and Iraq should be over yesterday. And not in the weak poll numbers we have seen; these ambiguous 55 percent say they don't like the war, while 39 percent approve of it with the rest undecided. This is where you have to ask yourself. Who are they polling to get numbers like this?
My gut tells me that over 80 percent of U.S. citizens want us out of those dishonest, immoral wars right now today. But the polls can't report that, can they? How would that look? Night after night of hearing that an overwhelming majority of Americans want us out of those wars, while the U.S. government apparently just doesn't care about their opinion. That would not be helpful for troop morale, for the careers of career politicians or for the Defense Department.
While we are on the Defense Department, most people I know would like to see about 35 - 40 percent of its budget taken away from it this week, Instead we have the "promise" of 2 percent cuts over the next six years.
On the extension of the tax cut for the top most wealthy - I believe that is also approximately 80 percent against. Think of it, what U.S. citizen of average income, knowing he or she is likely to be laid off during the next year, seeing the foreclosure of their home down the line, would agree to extend an immense tax cut to the wealthy? If you think about it rationally, you would have to agree that practically no one would go along with this plan. And yet if you want a poll showing you that Americans thought it was all right, just go to your local Chamber of Commerce. They will most likely have one or even more.
Of course there is polling that looks at the Iraq and the Afghanistan wars. Questions might be asked as follows:
"Do you believe we should leave Afghanistan before we finish the job?"
The questions are not asked like this:
The reason to be at war with Afghanistan ended a decade ago, do you believe we should still be fighting there?
Or in Iraq?
""Should we leave Iraq completely before we are sure it will not lapse into Civil War?"
The question not asked like this:
Since the Bush administration lied in getting the defense department to invade a sovereign country and murder 100,000 of it's people, do you believe we should still be there?
What it comes down to is this. The traditional poll questions are not only fixed to get the right response. They are also based on lies and half lies. So no matter how you look at it on any issue, the polls simply can't be right. None of my polling was scientific either. So I guess that makes us even, in the worst case scenario.
Polls are fantasies, much unlike the reality mentioned below.
Americans, I firmly believe, do not want cutbacks in social programs for the elderly and reductions in food rations for poor single mothers and their children. Most Americans want the "lock box" back when it comes to social security. If the government wants to lower the SS check on a couple making over $250,000 a year just in investments and interest, by all means lower it. They don't need the spare change of a social security check.
But if the government wants to lower Mary Baily's social security payments to the point where she won't be able to meet her monthly mortgage obligations, and she has to give up her home and go to live with her daughter and her knucklehead son-in-law in South Boston, that's another matter entirely.
Look what is happening in Wisconsin with the Republicans, whose ultimate goal is to kill collective bargaining in labor disputes. And now we hear that the infamous Koch Brothers, infamous for their various businesses, including mining that send many men to an early grave and pollute the environment, have actually been providing funds to the re-election campaigns of the Republicans in Wisconsin. But of course, the death of collective bargaining has also been a dream of the Koch brother for years.
We are receiving a better look at this new Republican Party as time goes by. My take on it so far is that it is brimming with racists, fascists and misogynists who want to take the U.S. back to the 1930s or earlier.
In short, they are reactionaries - but they are not very bright. The reactionary has one great enemy in life, a real game changer. It is called public backlash. I think I can hear it coming this way.
