CENTERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS – A frantic search unfolded in Centerville last night after a 19-year-old woman, experiencing a severe mental health crisis, fled a residence on foot with her infant child. The incident began around 8:30 p.m. when Barnstable Police Department patrol officers responded to reports of the woman suffering some sort of mental breakdown, yelling and throwing objects at her parents’ residence. According to initial reports, the woman, described as Hispanic and not wearing pants, ran into nearby woods carrying her infant. The Barnstable Police immediately deployed a K9 unit and additional patrol officers to the scene. State troopers joined the effort, establishing a perimeter, while a state police helicopter took off from Plymouth and was circling overhead in a matter of minutes. A regional search and rescue tech team was requested to begin staging at the Centerville Shopping Plaza. K9 units from surrounding towns were also requested to the scene. Barnstable Police detectives also began assisting in the urgent operation. A breakthrough in the search quickly came when an alert motorist reported spotting a naked woman carrying a baby along Route 28, near the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department. The entire search, which gripped everyone with concern, lasted approximately 45 minutes.
Officers quickly located the woman and her child at the entrance to the Holly Hill Apartments on Route 28. A Barnstable Police detective gently took the infant into his arms, while other officers provided the mother with something to cover herself. The infant, who appeared unharmed, was transported to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. The mother, under a mental health section order, was also taken to the hospital for treatment. The baby’s grandparents reportedly headed to Cape Cod Hospital to be with the child. The swift response by law enforcement and the vigilance of a concerned citizen ensured the safe recovery of both mother and child, bringing relief to a tense situation. Further details regarding the incident have not been released, but thanks to an abundance of concern from extraordinary people, including the rapid deployment of first responders, a family is now in a much safer position…
… one where they will hopefully find ongoing support during this challenging time.
