YARMOUTH PORT, MASSACHUSETTS — [HN VIDEO NOTES]  –  In the quiet hours well before dawn, when the world occasionally holds its breath, a young man sought solace on Water Street’s lonesome way to water. A congenial lad, he confided to Hyannis News his ritual of parking along the quiet, hard-packed dirt late at night, far from the maddening crowds, where the water and its surrounding marshlands whisper peace. Yet, this morning, fate turned as treacherous as the tide. His Lexus, a reliable all-wheel-drive companion, ventured too close to the edge where firm dirt yields to misleading muck. A misjudged turn saw his front tires suddenly bogged down, sinking into the soft, unyielding mud. With guarded hope, he eased the peddle, wanting to trust his machine’s ability to reclaim its footing. But the ground only clutched tighter. And in a desperate last-ditch effort he tried to gun it, wheels spinning and muck flying… and when that failed, he got out and began digging. He seemed a capable young man… and I’m quite sure he would have made it out if given enough time… but the rising tide had other plans. It rose swiftly, inch by inch, and by the time a tow truck could arrive, it was already too late. The once reliable Lexus stood half-submerged, and its headlights had flickered into darkness. The engine drowned in salt water. All was lost. I asked, “Is it insured?” He said it was. “You’ll be okay,” I said. He nodded, but was still second guessing his rescue efforts and what he could have possibly done differently. “I’ve been stuck in the sand when I was your age… but I was lucky the tide wasn’t coming in,” I said. Whether or not my words offered any consolation, I doubt it… and I certainly wasn’t able to tell by the forlorn look on the young man’s face. There was nothing else to say… and we both stared as water continued to rise into the wheel wells. “It was the tide that got you. The damn tide.” [HN VIDEO – PRESS PLAY] P.S. – Today’s Hytown Vignette is a brought to you by Wes Montgomery…  [CLICK IT/CRANK IT! HEADPHONES ABSOLUTELY OBLIGATORY!]
