This one, also from my vacation in Cape Cod, is a study of the patterns that waves make. I love ocean waves and can sit and just watch them for hours. Some are bigger, some smaller, they never stop rolling in and toppling over on the shore, sucking back and then the next one rolls in….over and over. I used table salt to give a grainy look to the sand of the beach in the foreground, though it is kind of hard to see unless you are viewing this piece in person.   The title of this post contains a quote from a poem by Mary Oliver who is a well known Cape Cod poet whose work really appeals to me – probably because it is highly visual and full of personification!   Here’s the full poem,   I go down to the shore.   I go down to the shore in the morningand depending on the hour the wavesare rolling in or moving out,and I say, oh, I am miserable, what shall—what should I do? And the sea saysin its lovely voice:Excuse me, I have work to do.   Mary Oliver, A Thousand Mornings, p. 1© 2012 by NW Orchard, LLCFirst published by Penguin Press 2012   Happy Friday! Maybe those of you who are local are planning to go down to the shore this weekend and immerse yourself in the ocean? – make sure to watch some waves on my behalf!
