HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN NOTES] – Chaos erupted Wednesday evening when a black BMW, missing a front tire and reportedly fleeing at speeds exceeding 100 MPH, led police on a heart-pounding, three-wheel pursuit. The chase began in downtown Hyannis before spanning multiple towns and ending with two young men slapped with serious charges!
The drama kicked off just after 10:00 p.m. in a parking lot at 500 Main Street, where Barnstable Police responded to reports of a passenger inside a BMW brandishing a handgun equipped with a laser. As officers approached, the BMW took off, reportedly tearing through a Hyannis business district at speeds reaching an alarming 70 MPH — more than twice the posted speed limit! According to radio transmissions, the rogue BMW is said to have swerved into the wrong lane several times, while speeding the wrong way along Independence Drive and surrounding streets, forcing cops to briefly call off the chase for public safety.
But the suspects weren’t done yet. Moments later, Barnstable Police patrol officers and at least one state trooper spotted the BMW — now sparking along on just three tires — near Route 6A and Route 132. The pursuit roared back to life as the vehicle rocketed south on Route 149 toward the Mid-Cape Highway, hitting Route 6 and pushing past 100 MPH as it barreled toward the Sagamore Bridge. With speeds too dangerous to continue, Barnstable Police again terminated the chase.
Minutes later, Sandwich Police discovered the unoccupied BMW on Ben Abbey Road in Bourne’s Sagamore area. The three occupants had already bolted on foot, but their escape was short-lived. A massive manhunt involving K9 units, state troopers, Barnstable, Sandwich, and Bourne Police, plus the Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit, quickly descended on the scene. As you will see in the following video, dramatic HN footage captured officers shouting, “DON’T MOVE!” as they cuffed one suspect found hiding behind a residence. All three young men were eventually detained.
Terrell Cardoza, 20, of West Yarmouth, now faces charges of Illegal Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm and Possession of Ammunition without a FID.
Michael Potter, 21, of Quincy, was hit with a laundry list of charges: Stop Sign Violation, Failure to Stop for Police, Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Operating a Vehicle with a Suspended License, Marked Lanes Violation, and Speeding.
In a shocking twist, the third occupant — a 20-year-old rear passenger — was released without charges. Speaking to Hyannis News Thursday morning, he claimed he only knew the front passenger and had hopped in for a ride home, unaware of the chaos about to unfold. He was “thinking” he wanted them to stop and let him out of the fleeing BMW, he told HN, later admitting he never actually voiced his pleas during the high-speed madness.
Investigators later returned to the scene and recovered a handgun believed to have been tossed during the chase. A bag containing a fully loaded Glock-style magazine, possibly packed with .40 caliber or 9mm ammo, was also found and logged as evidence.
The investigation remains active, with police still piecing together the night’s wild events.
The following HN Video begins with the three individuals detained in handcuffs. The video also contains Barnstable Police radio transmissions. HN will provide updates to this story as they become available.
