Above HN photo: Barnstable Police K9 Officer Nolan O’Melia (the son of a retired COMM FD firefighter) assists at the hydrant. Officer O’Melia also assisted firefighters in breaching the doorway to a maintenance room that was on fire last evening.   BARNSTABLE, MASSSACHUSETTS –  Crews responded to the Home Depot store on Independence Drive shortly before midnight this morning for reports of flames inside a maintenance room in the tool rental part of the building. A Barnstable Police patrolman with firefighting tools assisted Barnstable Firefighters in breaching the doorway to fire. Barnstable Firefighters were then able to stretch a line and knock down the flames relatively quickly. At the time of the following HN Video Report, there was still a question as to what actually caused the fire. A Barnstable Police Detective was summoned to the scene, along with the state fire marshal’s office, to assist the Barnstable Fire Department with their investigation. A member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit also responded for photographs. Workers inside the store at the time of the fire were able to safely evacuate the building. There were no reports of injuries. As you will hear, Chief Christopher Beal of the Barnstable Fire Department was kind enough to give a quick soundbite regarding the ongoing investigation. At this time, the investigation seems routine… but HN will provide official updates if anything changes.
