BARNSTABLE, MASSACHUSETTS – As you will hear in the following HN “video,” a man arrested on several warrants, including one out of Barnstable Superior Court for Armed Robbery, managed to break free and flee from custody while being escorted into the courthouse this morning. The escape drew multiple police resources to the Main Street area of Barnstable Village at around 8:15 a.m. According to a Yarmouth Police Department media statement, police converged on the area of Barnstable Superior court after Jayayvyn Stone Crayton, 25, of West Yarmouth, broke free from a Yarmouth Police officer’s custody while being escorted into the Superior courthouse. Crayton then took off running. The Yarmouth Police officer reportedly chased Crayton through the courthouse property and “across Route 6A through a business area when he lost sight of him.” Multiple Barnstable Police officers, along with Trial Court Officers, responded to the area and began searching the wood line, the YPD statement reads. In an arrest report prepared by Patrolman Jonathan Moore of the Barnstable Police (one of the responding officers to this morning’s escape), he had been in the process of transporting a male BPD prisoner to Barnstable District Court when he heard a transmission from a court officer’s radio, broadcasting that a prisoner had just fled from Superior Court. The fleeing prisoner was described as a male wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt, still handcuffed and running toward Barnstable Market on Main Street (Rte. 6A). Patrolman Moore immediately jumped into his cruiser and rushed to assist the Yarmouth Police Court Prosecutor who was actively in pursuit of the male later identified as Jatayvyn Crayton. While responding, Patrolman Moore reportedly observed “multiple citizens standing near the driveway to 3200 Main St. looking concerned and shocked at the incident as it unfolded.” Officers arrived at the rear of the property which was reportedly made up of tall sea grass and marsh. Patrolman Moore requested a K9 unit and began searching for disturbed sea grass that appeared recently traveled through. Court officers and the YPD officer then suddenly could be heard commanding Crayton to show his hands as he emerged crawling from the wood line. Officers were able to quickly regain custody of Crayton and additional responding officers were notified. Patrolman Moore’s report continues as follows: “Crayton was observed to have wet clothing with brush and leaf debris in his hair and clothing. Clayton was handcuffed with both hands palms facing each other and in front of his body. Crayton was [lying] face down and complaining of multiple injuries from head to toe. Barnstable FD rescue was requested at this time and Sgt. Fullam and Sgt. Cronin arrived to assist in bringing Crayton to the front of the property for evaluation. Barnstable FD arrived and Crayton was assessed and observed to have multiple abrasions scrapes and possible swelling of his left wrist. Crayton stated at this time he had collided with a post striking his head, and while running down the hill of 3200 Main St. slipped and fell hurting his wrist, knee, ribs and elbow. Crayton requested to be transported to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. Crayton was placed in leg irons at this time checking for proper fit not to impede circulation [double locked] […] Crayton was transported to CCH by Barnstable FD, I escorted Crayton in the rear of the ambulance. While at CCH Crayton was advised he was being charged with M.G.L. Chapter 268 Section 16A – Escape from Penal Institution/Court and would remain in Barnstable Police Custody until completion of medical attention. […] Jatayvyn Crayton was arrested for the folllowing charge; M.G.L. Chapter 268 Section 16A – Escape from Penal Institution/Court M.G.L. Chapter 272 Section 53 F – Disorderly Conduct” According to Officer Nicholas Giammarco of the Yarmouth Police Department, Crayton was arrested Sunday evening in Yarmouth on several warrants. There was a default warrant out of Falmouth District Court for Larceny. There was a straight warrant out of Wareham for motor vehicle charges, including Operating Under the Influence of drugs. And there was default warrant out of Barnstable Superior Court for Armed Robbery, Assault and Battery to Collect a Loan, and A&B. The armed robbery and assaults allegedly occurred somewhere in Barnstable County, according to Officer Giammarco, but he had no further information on those particular cases at the time of this report. The following HN “video” contains Barnstable Police radio transmission from this morning’s escape attempt….
