BARNSTABLE, MASSACHUSETTS – In a Barnstable District Court document, the following “factors” are listed as to why the murder suspect, Juscelene Guedes, was held in custody without bail:

“7. The defendant’s reputation and length of residence in the community.”

According to the Criminal Complaint, Juscelene Guedes, 29, with a reported address of 404 Great Marsh Road in Centerville, was charged with the following two felonies:
COUNT 1 – “MURDER,” where it is alleged Guedes, on 6/26/2024, “did assault and beat RENATO CHAVES, with intent to murder such person, and by such assault and beating did kill and murder such, in violation of G.L c.265, § 1. NO DISTRICT COURT FINAL JURISDICTION IN ADULT SESSION.”
COUNT 2 – “A&B WITH DANGEROUS WEAPON,” where it is alleged Guedes, on 6/26/2024, “did, by means of a dangerous weapon, a KNIFE instrument, assault and beat RENATO CHAVES, in violation of G.L. c.265, §15A(b). PENALTY: state prison not more than 10 years; or house of correction not more than 2 ½ years; or not more than $5000 fine; or both such fine and imprisonment. District Court has final jurisdiction under G.L c.218, §26.”
According to an “arraignment report” filed by Trooper Justin Waskiewicz of the Massachusetts State Police unit assigned to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office, on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at around 7:19 p.m., the Barnstable Police Department began receiving several 911 calls regarding a motor vehicle accident on Route 28, in the area of TD Bank. Trooper Waskiewicz’s arraignment report continues as follows:
Juscelene Guedes was arraigned yesterday (Thursday) in Barnstable District Court and was held in custody without bail. Several Boston TV News stations covered yesterday’s arraignment. WCVB’s Ted Wayman reported that prosecutors say the suspect and victim have a history of domestic abuse with each other. Wayman also reported, “Prosecutor’s say Guedes is here in the U.S. illegally…”
Marc Fortier with NBC Boston wrote, “Guedes has an open case with immigration and is originally from Brazil. She has been appearing in Boston immigration court, the defense noted.”
Kimberly Bookman of WHDH News reported speaking with a coworker of the victim. Renato Chaves reportedly was a busboy and waiter at the Brazilian Grill on Main Street in Hyannis. In an on-camera interview, Renato’s coworker described him as a hardworking man who always gave his best. “Officials said he was originally from Brazil and was working on the Cape to send money home,” according to Bookman’s report.
