COTUIT, MASSACHUSETTS –  [DEVELOPING]  –  An adult male was reportedly found in the roadway, badly injured last evening after an alleged hit and run closed down Route 28 as police investigated. At around 10:00 p.m. Friday evening, Barnstable Police rushed to a crash possibly involving a bicyclist on Route 28, just east of the intersection with Route 130.  In the following HN “video,” one of the first officers on scene can be heard asking for Cotuit Rescue to “step it up.”  According to radio transmissions, officers reported the vehicle that allegedly struck the bicyclist/pedestrian had left the scene.  There were no witnesses, according to one of the earlier BPD radio transmissions.  The section of Route 28 between Santuit-Newtown Road and Route 130 was now a crime scene and needed to be completely shut down.  Mashpee Police responded to the intersection of Route 130 and 28 to assist by shutting down eastbound traffic.  A Barnstable Police cruiser responded to Santuit-Newtown Road to shut down westbound vehicles.  Responding Cotuit FD EMTs inquired regarding the possibility of a Medflight helicopter.  Medflight was said to be unavailable due to weather conditions.  The patient was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital under a trauma alert.  His current condition was unknown at the time of this report.  Meanwhile, a patrolman at the crime scene radioed that he had just located a license plate.  It was a major clue.  Another patrolman was immediately dispatched to a Marstons Mills address on Route 149 to investigate.  At the address, the patrolman radioed that he had located a vehicle with front end damage.  Dispatch warned the officer that the registered owner has a history of drug and gun charges.  Additional police officers responded to assist… While a BPD accident reconstruction expert responded to the Cotuit crash scene, members of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office were assisting with evidence collection and photos, with one crime scene unit member responding directly to the CCH emergency room to photograph injuries.  Police on the license plate lead –  the one that led them to a Marstons Mills address –  eventually took a male suspect into custody.  According to sources, the suspect is currently looking at several charges, including Operating Under the Influence, Negligent Operation, and Leaving the Scene of a crash with Personal Injury.  The investigation is ongoing, and more charges may follow.  The suspect vehicle was seized by police and transported back to BPD Headquarters as the investigation continues…  [DEVELOPING] HN will provide updates as additional official details are released.  The following HN “video” contains radio transmissions from the Barnstable Police, Cotuit FD, and Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office… [HN VIDEO –  PRESS PLAY] * The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in a court of law.
