HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – According to a Hyannis Fire Department media statement, at 2:23 PM on Friday June 7, 2024, Barnstable Police Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a fire or explosion at 105 Ferndoc Street and dispatched the Hyannis Fire and Barnstable Police Departments. HN spoke with one witness who heard a very load explosion that sounded like a one of the garage’s bay doors possibly crashing down unusually hard. The first arriving Barnstable Police Sergeant determined that an occupant was still inside the building with fire and smoke visible. The first Hyannis Fire Department Company, Tower Ladder 1, immediately made entry into the building and prior to the arrival of an engine company… and without the protection of a hose line, began searching for the occupant. They quickly found the occupant and removed him to the exterior to an awaiting Hyannis ambulance. The patient was said to be a 31-year-old male (mechanic) suffering an oil burn (or burns) to his lower extremities. The patient was reportedly covered with oil, but conscious, according to a witness who arrived to help translate for the patient and first responders. Additional fire companies arrived shortly thereafter and extinguished the fire. The fire was associated with the failure of a waste oil storage tank which released a substantial amount of oil and other fluids. (According to radio transmissions, an estimated amount of 200 gallons of waste oil was released during the fire/explosion.) “The adult male who was injured required extensive decontamination prior to being flown to a Boston area hospital by Boston Medflight with life threatening injuries,” according to the HFD statement. Additionally, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, and the Town of Barnstable Health and Public Works Departments were reportedly engaged to limit the effects of the released oil. The fire and explosion remain under investigation by State Troopers assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Barnstable Police Department, and the Hyannis Fire Department, according to the HFD media statement. The following HN video contains police and fire department radio transmissions, mixed in the footage shot later in the investigation and cleanup efforts…. [HN VIDEO – PRESS PLAY]
