WEST YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN VIDEO NOTES] – A 19-year-old man from Centerville is under arrest after leading Yarmouth Police Officers on a dangerous high-speed car chase early this morning. Shortly after midnight, a Yarmouth Patrolman was checking on a vehicle parked inside the Sandy Pond Recreation Area when it suddenly took off from the officer without its headlights on. The vehicle then reportedly fled west on Buck Island Road at a high rate of speed onto Camp Street and eventually toward Barnstable on Willow Street. As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, Yarmouth Police squad cars scrambled toward the area of Willow Street in an effort to intercept the fleeing vehicle. It was particularly dangerous for officers and other motorists because the fleeing vehicle was said to be “blacked out,” or traveling without its headlights or any other lights on. As Barnstable Police units were notified of the dangerous driver heading into their town, the vehicle suddenly turned onto a side street, redirected and began traveling north back toward Yarmouth on Willow Street. Officers were right on the suspect vehicle’s tail as it turned back onto Camp Street and into the Raven’s Wood apartments, where the driver fled on foot. A 14-year-old female passenger was quickly detained and secured in the backseat of one of the YPD cruisers. Right as the YPD was about to deploy one of their K9 units, the driver walked out from hiding and was taken into custody without further incident. (And it’s a good thing he decided to cooperate because he avoided possibly being bitten by the police K9…) The 19-year-old Centerville man was arrested for Failing to Stop for Police (along with other likely charges). The 14-year-old was released from police custody to her mother. According to a source on scene, the driver said he had fled because he’s initially from the country of Jamaica where the police behave differently, in his view. Basically, his excuse for fleeing was reportedly out of a fear of the police. As you will hear in the video, one officer explained that had they not fled, nothing would have happened… apart from them likely being kicked out of the recreational area because it was after hours and closed to the public at the time. The following HN Video highlights the entire chase scene and subsequent arrest… thankfully nobody was injured, including the young driver and his minor female passenger. [HN VIDEO – PRESS PLAY] P.S. – Today’s Hytown Vignette is brought to you by David Bowie…  [CLICK IT/CRANK IT!
