HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS –  [HN NOTES & MULLINGS ON THE MATTER] – According to a report filed by Patrolman Liam Loiselle of the Barnstable Police Department, on Wednesday March 6, 2024, at around 7:43 a.m., officers were dispatched to a home on Saint Francis Circle for a report of Justin Moreira holding his mother at knife point. The mother, another son and his girlfriend managed to barricade themselves in a basement bedroom. Patrol officers were eventually able to evacuate the mother, son and girlfriend out a window to safety. At this point, Justin Moreira, age 30, became a barricaded subject inside the residence and the Cape Cod Regional SWAT Team was activated. Officer Loiselle’s report continues as follows: Upon arrival Detective Lieutenant Cunningham had conversation with [the suspect’s mother] who advised that her son Moreira was scheduled to attend a court date at Barnstable Superior Court this morning. She further stated that she was located in the living room when Moreira approached her with a knife demanding the keys to her gun safe. He stated to her that “The Feds are going to get me, I am going to get killed” at which point he grabbed her phone. After taking the phone Moreira directed her upstairs to her bedroom at knife point. Once in the upstairs bedroom Moreira again demanded her to give him the keys to her gun safe. Throughout this, [the suspect’s mother] stated that Moreira was acting crazy, and making threats toward her stating “Don’t make me stab you.” Moreira then located the keys to her gun safe in the night stand. At this time [the suspect’s mother] stated she attempted to convince Moreira that those [were] not the keys to her gun safe, and the keys were in her purse downstairs. Moreira then accused his mother of lying to him, and told her if she tried to run he would come at her with the knife. [The suspect’s mother] was finally able to get away from Moreira and run down the stairs to the basement door where her [other son] was sleeping. At this time [the suspect’s mother] stated that she screamed in fear as Moreira continued to verbally threaten to stab her. With the assistance of her [other son], they both were able to remove themselves from Moreira and secure themselves in [her other son’s] bedroom […] Barnstable Police Patrol and the Cape Cod Regional SWAT Team established a perimeter around the residence […] As the perimeter was being established Moreira opened the front door of the residence and was observed to be holding a firearm. Moreira retreated into the residence at which point several rounds were fired by Moreira from inside of the residence toward perimeter officers. Communication was established with Moriera by Cape Cod Regional SWAT negotiators at which time Moreira made several statements to include “I’ve shot eight (8) rounds at it, there must be no one in the SWAT truck, I’ve been shooting at it. I want them dead.” Moreira also stated “Thirty minutes to get me car or I am going to start taking people out.” […] During the preceding of this active investigation Moreira continues to discharge firearms from inside the residence at officers. There were reportedly SWAT team members inside one of their vehicles when Moreira began pelting it with bullets. Fortunately, the vehicle’s armor protected the officers inside as bullets ricocheted off its side. Negotiators and a mental health clinician tried to convince Moreira to come out peacefully, but he refused and continued to “periodically fire rifle and handgun rounds on perimeter scene SWAT officers surrounding the house,” according to a BPD media statement. Moreira reportedly also shot and partially disabled a robotic state police dog that had been attempting to locate him inside the home. A source on scene later told HN how the dog was found in a down-stay position after being shot. Throughout the day, Moreira reportedly continued to fire at SWAT members. After seven hours, Moreira was still refusing to come out peacefully. SWAT deployed a form of pepper spray inside the home, but Moreira still wouldn’t come out. Finally, a ballistic vehicle equipped a demolition attachment began to “forcibly encourage” Moreira to exit the room he had been holed up in. Moreira was then taken into custody without injury. According to various reports, Justin Moreira is no stranger to police with 41 entries on his adult Board of Probation record, including Carrying a Dangerous Weapon, and “being on Federal probation for being a felon in possession of a firearm, silencer, and ammunition.” In May of 2022, Moreira was also arrested for threatening to commit a school shooting!  [CLICK HERE FOR HN REPORT] A search of court dockets reveals that Moreira has had issues with the law for well over a decade. Charges range from weapon possession, driving under the influence, drug possession and distribution, disorderly conduct, operating on a suspended license, and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash with property damage. Many in the public are outraged at the fact Moreira was free from custody and able to get his hands on firearms. A local mother expressed horror that a man accused of recently threatening a school shooting (of all things!) caused her child’s school to be placed on lock-down while police officers were being shot at in a family neighborhood just blocks away. Her anger was palpable as she wondered if it was going to take Moreira actually killing school children before “they” keep him locked up…  (“they” being the courts…) While being booked on March 6, Moreira reportedly threatened to kill police officers and their families when he is released again from custody in ten years, according to sources. Moreira is just 30 years old and he will likely be released at some point, even though he is now being charged with multiple counts of attempting to murder police officers, among other violent firearm and weapon charges, including kidnapping. Computer checks revealed that Moreira certainly did not possess a gun license during his March 6 shooting rampage, but that his mother and stepbrother both had licenses to carry firearms at the time. Moreira reportedly remains in custody since his latest arraignment for allegedly trying murder cops. His bail was revoked on his previous charge for allegedly threatening a school shooting. His next court date is reportedly on April 4, 2024. Whether or not Justin Moreira will someday be able to finally make good on his alleged deadly threats still remains to be seen.
