“She’s just like you and me… but she’s homeless.” ~ Crystal Waters   HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN PHOTO NOTES & MULLINGS ON THE MATTER] – Let me first start by saying that Hyannis streets along with most local and statewide politicians will chew you up and spit you out if you let them!  The streets are cold, brutal and unforgiving, and our politicians (with some very rare exceptions) simply do not care.  And I’m going to have to stop right here… because anyone who has been paying attention to what is happening nationally and locally knows exactly what I’m talking about! I don’t even have to spell it out.  If your eyes are open, you know.  Our priorities are all screwed up and it’s hurting everyone, especially our poor citizens… and I’ll just leave it at that, for now.  (Sorry, I just can’t right now… but try to read between the following HN photo notes.)     DEVELOPING (ABOVE HN PHOTOS): At around 10 pm last evening, an alert Barnstable plainclothes officer stopped a BMW X6 on Main Street, near the Sturgis Charter School.  He made contact with the driver and eventually noticed a handgun tucked behind the driver’s seat.  The driver reportedly did not have a license to be in possession/carrying a firearm… … and he was subsequently arrested.   ABOVE HN PHOTO:  There was a “language barrier” and as the investigation unfolded, the suspect had to speak with a translator via a cellphone held up by a Barnstable patrolman.   ABOVE HN PHOTO:  A Barnstable Police patrol sergeant has a serious look of concern as he carefully secures the handgun inside a special “GUN EVIDENCE BOX.”   ABOVE HN PHOTO:  A member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit assists with the evidence process… (having his eyes open, he will later engage in a random of act of kindness while looking around the scene.)   ABOVE HN PHOTO:  A BPD patrolman checks the BMW for additional evidence…   ABOVE HN PHOTO:  Another BPD patrolman finishes making sure the suspect is safely secured in a seatbelt just prior to transporting him back to police headquarters where the investigation was expected to continue…   ABOVE HN PHOTO:  The plainclothes BPD officer who made the arrest is seen here waiting for a flatbed tow truck as the investigation is ongoing. HN NOTE:  This is a developing story, and the investigation was ongoing at the time of this report.   HN has reached out to a police information officer for additional details… check back for updates.   ABOVE HN PHOTO:  As he was finishing with the illegal firearm caper, the aforementioned member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit spotted a 57-year-old homeless woman making her bed on the sidewalk, several paces from the BMW X6 traffic stop.  He then went to his cruiser and returned with a new winter hat and a pair of warm gloves for the woman.  He knelt down beside her and explained that the hat also has a little LED light attached, just in case she needs it.   Before leaving, he told her to be sure to reach out to him whenever he’s around.  Especially if she happens to need anything. HN happens to know this particular homeless woman as we’ve been having conversations in recent weeks.  She says she became homeless back in September, and that she has never been homeless before… The whole thing was quite a bizarre and offensive juxtaposition last evening.  On one hand, you have a healthy young man in his prime working years driving around in a luxury car while allegedly in possession of a firearm without a license… a serious crime.  On the other hand, you have a well-spoken, polite and sober woman (who says she does not drink or do dangerous drugs… in fact, I’ve never seen her drunk or on drugs in the short time I’ve known her), who tells HN she used to work as a nurse before becoming disabled with serious health issues… and here she is next to a storefront with her luggage, making her bed, and preparing for an evening on the cold cement sidewalk… and with a nor’easter approaching, no less.   She prefers the well-illumined storefronts because she’s not used to the streets and feels a little safer… in hopes the police will be able to see her while driving by.   … and I tell her the young police officers working in Hyannis have hearts of gold.  And that’s true of course… … it’s just that they tend to be sneaky and modest about it, and it’s incredibly difficult to capture them on camera.    But I’m on to their tricks… Look, there are two types of cops in Massachusetts, those who are in it for the power trips and big salaries (200 to 400K a year in some cases), and those who would be out there serving and doing good without pay, because that’s who they are… “real cops,” 24/7.  It’s in their selfless nature… they would be helping people whether officially sworn in or not… and besides, what in the world would the real, dedicated cops ever do with piles and piles of money in the first place?  They don’t need much… doing good and serving is more than enough for these latter types. And thankfully, the cops I’m privileged to see these days here on the Cape, every overnight, during the wee hours, are of the latter type! And to them I say, “Our days are numbered boys and girls, spend them well… … and don’t waste your time on the money-grubbing, power-hungry bullshit – that’s a fool’s journey.” Be safe out there and God bless.
