Sandwich is the oldest town on Cape Cod and is located in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Post tot Naufracia Portus is the town motto, which means “after so many shipwrecks, a haven.” At the time of the 2010 census, the population was 20,675.   The Wampanoags, who spoke Algonquian and befriended the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony, colonized Cape Cod. With the approval of the Plymouth Colony, a group of people from Saugus, Massachusetts, founded Sandwich in 1637. It is named after the English seaport of Sandwich. It was founded in 1639 and, together with Yarmouth, Massachusetts, is the oldest town on Cape Cod. In 1884, the town of Bourne was formed when the western half of the town was severed from the old Town of Sandwich.   The Benjamin Nye Homestead on Old County Road (previously known as Old King’s Highway) and the Benjamin Holway House, built in 1789 at 379 Route 6A, are two historic homes in Sandwich.
