Before getting started and going out magnet fishing, it’s important to do your research and find the best spots.   So, where should you go?   The first step is to know what is near you as far as water sources go. This could include rivers, lakes, ponds, or even canals and old wells. Remember, the more secluded and less-frequented the spot, the better your chances of finding something valuable; there is never a guarantee though. The more frequented places are gonna have more stuff, but more often than not, it’s gonna be stuff people intentionally dumped.   Next, consider the history of the area. Are there any known historical sites or events that may have led to metal objects being in the water? Old bridges, docks, or even areas near industrial sites can be “honey holes” for magnet fishing enthusiasts. Our favorite spots as of late are boat launches! Historical maps, old newspapers, and regional archives can become a wealth of information.   It’s extremely important to check local regulations and obtain any necessary permits before embarking on your magnet fishing journey. I have never had to deal with permits but I have always called if its a place I’m unsure whether I should be there or not. Some areas may have restrictions or prohibited zones, so make sure you’re following the rules to keep both yourself and the environment safe. If you see a “KEEP OUT” sign then it’s fairly obvious what to do, keep out!   Safety includes protecting yourself in a variety of ways. Always wear gloves to protect your hands, and be sure to handle any sharp or dangerous objects with caution. Additionally, be mindful of the weight and pulling force of your magnet to avoid any accidents. If it’s too heavy, either leave it for another time or pair up when you go out; that’s the safest thing to do anyway!   When you go out, and this may be one of the most important recommendations; TELL SOMEONE! Tell them where you’re going, who with and how long you plan to be there. It sounds silly but who knows what or who you’ll find out there. Be safe!   Magnet fishing is a thrilling and rewarding hobby that allows you to uncover hidden treasures just beneath the water’s surface. So, go out there, do your research, find the perfect spots, and happy magnet fishing!
