***  WATCH ***  COPS, FIREFIGHTERS RISK THEIR OWN LIVES IN PERILOUS ATTEMPT TO SAVE WOMAN TRAPPED IN RAPIDLY SINKING VEHICLE…

WEST YARMOUTH, Massachusetts – Shortly before 11:00 p.m. last evening, police and firefighters scrambled toward Bay View Street Beach for a vehicle that had just driven into the harbor with an occupant still inside. The first police officers on scene found a vehicle rapidly sinking into the treacherous currents at the entrance to Hyannis Inner Harbor. The driver, reportedly a woman, approximately in her forties, was still trapped inside. Officers quickly shed their gun-belts and gear, running into the water in an effort to free the woman. The vehicle had just sunk out of sight as HN arrived on scene. As you will see, a Yarmouth Police sergeant was so committed, he was almost sucked under with the sinking vehicle himself. A fellow patrolmen grabbed him and assisted him to safety. The Hyannis FD Dive Team arrived on scene first, with other dive team members from across the Cape arriving shortly thereafter. Thanks to the brave efforts of the initial police and firefighters on scene, dive team members knew exactly where the vehicle was currently submerged, as it had already drifted a about 50 yards with the outgoing tide. Divers were able to eventually remove the woman from the submerged vehicle. She was quickly brought to shore in a rescue basket equipped with flotation devices. She was unconscious and it didn’t look good. Firefighters placed her into an ambulance and transported her several blocks to nearby Cape Cod Hospital.
