***  WATCH ***  WOMAN REPORTED SEEING PERSON IN HER HOUSE

SOUTH YARMOUTH – [HN NOTES AND MULLINGS ON THE MATTER] – It has been a mostly busy week in terms of Cape crime… … and this past Monday morning – 8/28/2023 – was no exception. As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, the Yarmouth Police Department received an alarming 911 call from a woman reporting “someone was just in her house.” The call came in shortly before dawn, sending cruisers racing toward a home on Christmas Way. Officers arrived quickly and learned the intruder was last seen running away toward the rear of the DY Intermediate Middle School. It was nearly pitch dark when officers arrived. A Yarmouth Police K9 unit arrived and conducted a search to no avail. A member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit responded to document and collect evidence to the rear of the home. A neighbor emerged from her home to ask what was going on. Officers told her and asked if she saw anything. She didn’t. They then asked if she had any security cameras. She didn’t. She was advised to call if she sees anything suspicious in the days to come. Unfortunately, there was not a good description of the figure seen fleeing. But officers had some promising leads they were actively pursuing… … and HN will provide updates as they become available. This brazen type of criminal activity is no longer uncommon across the Cape. No neighborhood is immune. Even if one believes they currently reside in safe neighborhood. Those beliefs may lead residents into a false sense security. In a 1998 Irish crime film entitled “The General,” actor Brendan Gleeson played the main, infamous character of Martin Cahill, A.K.A. ‘The General,’ who was an actual Dublin crime boss, responsible for masterminding numerous burglaries and armed robberies up until his assassination in 1994. (It’s an awesome flick.) And there was a part in the film where Cahill (Gleeson) was asked why he was about to shell out a hefty sum of money for a house in an upscale neighborhood, far from his friends and partners in crime, far from his cultural familiarity, including those of his ilk. I don’t remember the exact quote, but his answer went something like, ‘I prefer to be closer to my work.’ Meaning, some criminals don’t rob and steal around their own homies in the hood, they prefer to commute to where the pickings are better. Something to keep in mind if one believes, falsely, that they’re ‘snug as bug in rug,’ in their fine, upscale neighborhood. One thing I learned in my years covering crime, including my years overseas, the nicer and “safer” the neighborhood, the more one becomes a target. We all are responsible for our own security these days.  And the proverbial Calvery might not ever come to the rescue – they might be “tied up” across town. Lock your doors.  Buy some cameras.  Light up your perimeter.  Keep your eyes peeled… … and try to have a splendiferous Cape Cod day!
