Despite the CIA assurances to Congress earlier, despite every indication coming from sources in the Egyptian Army, despite the word on the street, when dictator Mubarak finally appeared this afternoon to announce what many believed would be his resignation, he refused to step down, stating that he would no longer be president and the VP would take power. But sources inside the palace say that VP Suleiman will not have power over Mubarak, meaning that he is still in charge.
Some described Mubarak as "sadistic" and felt like they were being "played" by Mubarak. Further Mubarak and his VP both expressed a feeling that "troublemakers" from the outside are the cause of this uprising and that the government might be forced to put it down. Now many believe things will get much uglier, perhaps as soon as tomorrow.
Meanwhile the demonstrators are refusing to leave the square in Cairo and vowing to be there tomorrow with the same message. They want Mubarak and the vice president to step down, That want the entire regime gone. Some said they would even trust the military to take over while they choose a new government.
Last week it was discovered and reported that Mubarak is a billionaire, worth by some estimates over $60 billion. This surprised some in the demonstrator's ranks since it is widely known that the U.S. gives approximately $1 billion a year to Egypt, an extremely poor country. In the past U.S. intelligence had believed that much of these U.S. funds went to the Egyptian Army. But now it is theorized that U.S. funding and funds from other nations have been funneled into Mubarak's personal accounts.
Some also believe that Mubarak is paying extra funds to certain military leaders for remaining loyal to him.
Diplomats from various nations stated that the on-going revolution has the momentum and will not be stopped. They believe Pres. Obama should make an appearance at the White House and express his support for the demonstrators. And soon. Some believe that if Obama doesn't call for him to step down or throw his support behind the demonstrators, the U.S. will not enjoy good relations with Egypt following the revolution.
