HYANNIS – [HN NOTES & MULLINGS ON THE MATTER] –  In good-ole Hyannis we call it the “Hytown Shuffle.” Where a drunk driver screwing around on their cellphone accelerates to top speed, blindly slams into another vehicle, jumps out, and scampers away like a rabid weasel. However, last evening’s shuffle was a little unusual because the fleeing driver left behind a large freezer bag full of drugs. I asked a cop on scene, “I wonder what he ultimately decided to run off with since he left behind his huge bag of weed?”  (Assuming it was a “he…”)  The officer had no logical response, aside from a half-suppressed chuckle, his wheels spinning, as if performing an extensive brain scan, searching for the rare files labeled “drugs left behind.” Rare because most hit-and-run drivers tend to value their drugs and would never willingly leave them behind, unless they had more than one bag, for example, and had to decide which things to run off with, which to leave behind. A tough decision because when fleeing a crash scene, one has so very little time to pack. The other driver – the one that stayed on scene like a normal, red-blooded human being – reported feeling a little woozy at first, having just been taken completely by surprise. Just moments earlier, with nearly the entire roadway to himself, quietly stopped at the Route 28 and Pitchers Way red light, minding his own business, perhaps looking forward to that pizza slice left over from dinner, an alto sax whispering peaceful drive-home ambiance — when suddenly, WHAMMO! The forceful rear-end impact abruptly launched his pickup a good 50 to 60 yards across the intersection and further down Rte. 28.  His Toyota Tacoma’s tailgate was now completely bashed in.  And his pizza dream would have to wait, as the idiot who just torpedoed his ass was running away without even checking on him. It was right around midnight last evening. As the very few Tuesday evening bar stragglers were just beginning to spill out onto the streets and highways, and the odds of being picked-off by a drunk driver were still relatively lower at that point, but gradually becoming more and more likely… more and more like a deadly game of highway roulette. The sober drivers versus the reckless intoxicated idiots, oncoming drivers that keep us guessing, as one never truly knows which set of headlights hides the one who’s loaded.  We spin the revolver’s cylinder and say a prayer. An ambulance from the Hyannis Fire Department arrived to check on the remaining dazed driver – the one that stayed. Thankfully, he did not need to be transported to hospital. As for the weasel that fled, at the time of this report, he (she or they) had not yet been located. The following HN Video highlights the all-too-common “Hytown Shuffle,” although an unusual one due to the bag full of drugs left behind… [HN VIDEO – PRESS PLAY] P.S. – Today’s Hytown Vignette is a brought to you by Art Pepper… [CLICK IT/CRANK IT!] The post ***  WATCH ***  FLEEING DRIVER LEAVES LARGE BAG OF WEED AT CRASH SCENE first appeared on Hyannis News - News & Information for Hyannis Cape Cod.
