HYANNIS –  As you will see in the following HN Video, Barnstable Police patrol officers responded to the Airport Rotary after a vehicle apparently slammed into the rotary sign and then fled the scene. A state trooper and Barnstable officers followed a trail of leaking engine fluids for about a mile until they discovered a heavily damage Volvo in a parking lot on Yarmouth Road, with damage consistent with striking the Airport Rotary sign. Officers also encountered two males with the damaged vehicle. When asked why they didn’t stay at the scene after striking the sign, they allegedly told officers they were looking for a safe place to pull over. The owner of the vehicle appeared highly intoxicated but denied, “150 percent,” to being the driver of the vehicle at the time of the crash. His friend, “Oscar,” who is recently visiting from California, told officers he was the one driving (although, at the time of this report, officers had expressed not being totally convinced whether that was, in fact, the truth). As you will see in the HN Video, the owner of the vehicle, a man on record as residing in Mashpee, appeared to be inpatient with the investigation and in a hurry to go home… and at one point apparently began to leave. Officers stopped him and arrested him for allegedly having been in possession of a switchblade knife they reportedly had taken from him moments earlier. The owner of the Volvo is facing felony charges for allegedly carrying a switchblade, a dangerous, prohibited weapon. He was also placed into protective custody for his perceived high level of intoxication. Oscar, the friend visiting from Cali., is looking at serious motor vehicle charges, including those related to allegedly leaving the scene of the accident with obvious property damage. [DELOPING] The following HN Video highlights this morning’s hit-and-run investigation. NOTE: HN was only carrying a still camera at the time, so the images might be a little shaky… sorry ’bout that… [HN VIDEO – PRESS PLAY] P.S. – Today’s Hytown Vignette is brought to you by Spandau Ballet… [CLICK IT/CRANK IT!]   * The details contained in the above report are based on police radio transmissions, observations on scene, and information from police sources on scene. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
