HYANNIS – What began as a so-called “routine traffic stop” suddenly turned into a very brief foot chase, tackle and arrest last evening. An officer suffered minor cuts and abrasions during the take-down and was treated on scene by Hyannis Rescue.
The traffic stop happened around 9:30 p.m. on Center Street near the intersection with Elm Ave.
Officers had been investigating the driver for possible impairment when he suddenly tried to take off on foot…
After being taken into custody, officers began searching the vehicle. Illicit drugs of varying quantities and types were uncovered and seized as evidence.
The investigation is ongoing, but according to police sources, the driver, a 38-year-old male from Wareham, is looking at a number of charges, including Operating Under the Influence of Drugs and Resisting Arrest.
A significant amount of powder seized is suspected to be either Fentanyl, heroin, or both. The suspect is at least looking at a possession charge for the powder, but that charge may possibly be upgraded to “distribution” as the investigation continues. The specific charge will ultimately depend on the precise amount of powder seized… where a higher amount will tip the scales toward a more serious “distribution” drug charge.
A large quantity of suspected marijuana was also seized, and the suspect is expected to also be charged with Intent to Distribute a Class D substance. Additional drug charges may also be pending as investigators carefully sift through and examine all of the substances seized. [DEVELOPING]
